TELEVISION: BLACK MIRROR (FAVORITE EPISODES FROM BEST TO WORST)

Inspired by Entertainment Weekly’s list. Which i greatly disagreed with. I started this list before reading that list, but feels it was needed after.

This seasons episodes seem to try to go back to the original mission statement and feel more British. While there are some recognizable stars in the roles. This seems more business as usual with Charlie Brooker writing all the scripts and more than anything more noted independent movie directors directing episodes. This year doesn’t feel as Americanized as last year when it seems like Brooker wrote some stories and you had more guest writer paying homage to the show with their particular versions of episodes of what they thought. As season 3 seemed more like an experiment. That felt more americanized. It was fun and provided a broader audience but also felt like it was a little off, maybe it was the shock of having so many episodes at your disposal

1. FIFTEEN MILLION UNITS (SEASON 1)

A story of love in it's own way of sacrifice and commerce. The value of feelings

2. WHITE CHRISTMAS (SEASON 2)

This is a really unexpected episode. Though kind of shows the popularity of the show in Getting Jon Hamm. Who is throughout the episode and the main attraction but not the star as he seems in on everything and though eventually is affected as a victim. Not necessarily the worst off.

3. WHITE BEAR (SEASON 2)

The show at it’s best cruel and surprising that seems to come out of nowhere.

4. SHUT UP AND DANCE (SEASON 3)

A real rubik’s cube with a bit of THE GAME thrown in. By the end you feel disgusted and dirty.

5. USS MACALLISTER

This is definitely one of the better and strongest episodes. As it is also something that is a bit critical and a kick to the face of certain members of the audience me included. I love it when a piece of work isn’t afraid to criticize if not alienate it's fans. Even if the fans will play it off like he must be talking about those guys over there those extremists certainly not me. Fan boys ins particular who feel meek, picked upon and undervalued but have rich fantasies and fantasy lives where they are what is important and the heroes. This episode takes a look at that but also what of the people in your fantasies. You are basically treating them the same way you didn’t like being treated and in some ways are worse in your desire for power and strength.

Only here it is more literal and goes a step further. Especially not when necessary cruelty. Though not real is a step to far to keep everyone else in line. Just as at a crucial moment another character apologizes and gives him credit. So do we early on feel sorry for this character but he goes a step too far for a total forgiveness.

6. THE WALDO MOMENT (SEASON 2)

7. PLAYTEST (SEASON 3)

8. HANG THE DJ (SEASON 4)

This seems to be this year’s San Junipero. Not as deep and willing to go into a dating and romantic episode with humor and some gloom, but again with a happy ending through struggle. There were plenty of ways I thought the story could have gone or had ideas to more justify the ending. It seems here that one of the reasons for the happy ending is that it is another roll of the dice where you keep the audience guessing of here it could go and that not all episodes have to end so gruesomely or sad. Though I will admit these happy episodes more times then not leave me somewhat disappointed. As don’t we have so many constricted forced happy endings.

Even San Junipero was happy but not entirely. I call myself a romantic and I usually am not a fan of the seasons romantic episodes. It seems since season 2 there have been these episodes of hope. That I never can quite gel with entirely. They seem to be a little lighter.

9. ARKANGEL (SEASON 4)

Directed by Jodie Foster. This tale examines the problems of helicopter parenting and not only keeping free will at bay, but also injecting yourself into your child's life too much.

10. SAN JUNIPERO (SEASON 3)

By now the most popular and talked about episode and award winning one. This is where the happy endings start that throws the audience off that there doesn't always have to be a sad twist. it is possible to meet original expectations and still have a happy one. Though i still prefer the dark. this one stands out as it is full of hope and promise despite the despair that most of the reality provides

11. NOSEDIVE (SEASON 3)

While it fits it also fits the show. It feels more like an attempt of an episode, more than a natural fit. This is one of the episodes that feels the most Americanized, Almost like a hollywood-ish type episode. Maybe some of the recognizable faces does it. As it has a dark ending Though with a spot of joy.

12. BLACK MUSEUM (SEASON 4)

Like short versions of episodes, but also feels almost like a TALES FROM THE CRYPT episode.

13. CROCODILE (SEASON 4)

With this episode I wonder if the ending was thought of first and the rest of the episode made up to match and lay the ground Work. Though gets points for referencing BUGSY MALONE and giving a kind of what would you do under the same circumstances.

14. MEN AGAINST FIRE (SEASON 3)

15. THE NATIONAL ANTHEM (SEASON 1)

An interesting. What if. That showed the Show wasn’t afraid of going there. It also seems like a joke taken seriously and given all the drama it could.

16. HATED IN THE NATION (SEASON 3)

A strange sort of buddy cop procedural episode. with a seemingly unstoppable killer.

17. BE RIGHT BACK (SEASON 2)

18. THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF YOU (SEASON 1)

19. METALHEAD (SEASON 4)

Seems more like an avant grade action film scenario. Something that might come from Oat studios and director Neil Blokankemp
