When a depressed woman is burglarized, she finds a new sense of purpose by tracking down the thieves alongside her obnoxious neighbor. But they soon find themselves dangerously out of their depth against a pack of degenerate criminals.
A vigilante tale like no other.
The film shows a realistic brutality in violence, But also has a sense of humor that is both dark and funny, Never truly sensationalized. Though always feel just around the corner.
The film also manages to always provide something humorous or silly happening while in the middle of violence.
It has some off beat moments and is dry with it’s humor, But it also is a marvel of momentum building like a thriller with moments of hilarity The film feels original and well thought out, While also relying more on characters than action even though there is plenty of the later.
You can see why so many people enjoy the film as it deals with something familiar and recognizable by presents it in a different way. The characters aren't experts at anything really either are the villains more losers of a sort in the long run and especially socially. Though they are people too and get tired of being picked on and taken for granted.
The performances are all pitch perfect for this film and provide more than one dimension. As far as just what you see of them on screen.
Not as action packed as one would hope but you can tell writer director Macon Blair has a style and control of his work and the film All his own though it feels a bit similar to the films he has appeared in by his friend and director Jeremy Saulnier the film feels inspired by him but is it's own animal as there is more comedic allowed In This film and it has it’s own identity and personality. That also feels like it could be inspired by the Coen Brothers
How the main Characters make a connection and have natural chemistry. That they are almost in their own mismatched buddy cop film. They are characters who wouldn't ever necessarily be noticed by they stay interesting and fascinating in themselves.
As the film seems to delve in and out of story and then into character. Though that is what keeps the film going as well as interest in the film. Is that no matter what the main character you care about played by Melanie Lynskey. She is the brightest spot and you want her to be safe and also get her happy ending. Considering what and who she is around.
Elijah wood lends hilarious support as her mulleted neighbor who becomes her partner and enforcer to a degree. Who has a love of heavy metal music.
There is Nothing quite like this film. At least not recently. Which makes the film feel like such a breath of fresh air and exhilarating.
Jane levy is in this and like how there are some actors in certain films that seem to be a warning that the film is unsatisfactory or maybe the material is weak. She seems to be the opposite where as when she is in a film it means it will be interesting but definitely not bad. Usually quite surprising
One scene in particular cracked me up with actress Jane levy as her character's fate and injury is similar to the one she suffered in the EVIL DEAD remake
The third contact burst into a comedy of errors that feels like a inspired tour de force
